The Furness Abbey Fellowship, FAF, is a small, volunteer charity set up in 2012 to help promote the history and heritage of Furness Abbey, a Savigniac monastery founded in 1127. By 1147 the abbey had joined the larger Cistercian Order and would eventually become the second richest Cistercian monastery in England. The Furness Abbey Fellowship aims to support the work of English Heritage in preserving and interpreting this unique site for future generations.
The Fellowship organises small and large scale events throughout the year to promote local and national awareness of the beauty and importance of Furness Abbey. All funds raised through these events are used to finance projects to support the work of English Heritage in Furness and to reach out to the local community and schools.
During restoration work in 2010 the unexpected discovery of the grave of an abbot, his crosier and ring gave FAF a great challenge on its formation. An intense local fundraising effort allowed the purchase of a specially designed, environmentally controlled cabinet to allow the crosier and ring to remain on site where we feel they belong. We believe that this can and should be a key unique selling point in attracting visitors to our abbey.
What brings the volunteers of FAF together is a wish to share their love for and feelings about this place with as many others as possible. Whether volunteers grew up here or moved to the area, all have come to feel the peace, beauty and remarkable atmosphere of this secluded, steep sided valley and its still impressive sandstone built abbey.
